Oil Shale is mixture of organic compounds trapped in rock deep below the earths surface. Oil shale contains Bitumen and a significant amount of Kerogen. With the use of new technology, liquid hydrocarbons can be extracted. Oil shale involves mining rather then regular oil which is pumped out of the ground.

In view of the expected importance of oil shale in the near future, President Woodrow Wilson in 1916 established two Naval Oil Shale Reserves, large tracts of prime oil shale that were kept from passing into private ownership. Oil Shale Reserve 1 (26,406 acres) was in Garfield County, Colorado, eight miles west of the town of Rifle. Oil Shale Reserve 2 (88,890 acres) was in Carbon and Uintah counties, Utah. In 2018, the U.S. produced 669 million metric tons of oil and 832 billion cubic meters of natural gas. As of 2018, it has the world's ninth-largest oil reserves and fifth-largest natural gas Oil shale is a fine grained sedimentary rock formed from the compaction and heating of organic rich sediments and containing significant amounts of kerogen. Global oil shale facts. Daily shale oil production 17,000 barrels According to the World Energy Council, in 2008 the total production of shale oil from oil shale was 930,000 tonnes, the equivalent of 17,700 barrels per day – in comparison, production of conventional oil and natural gas liquids in 2008 amounted to 3.95 billion tonnes or 82.12 million barrels per day. Shale oil is a high-quality crude oil  that lies between layers of shale rock, impermeable mudstone, or siltstone. Oil companies produce shale oil by fracturing the rock formations that contain the layers of oil. Shale oil comprises more than a third of the onshore production of crude oil in the lower 48 states.

Shale gas, specifically, is natural gas trapped within shale geologic formations (a type of sedimentary rock). Both oil and natural gas are considered non-

Oil shale is a rock that contains significant amounts of organic material in the form of kerogen. Up to 1/3 of the rock can be solid organic material. Liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons can be extracted from the oil shale, but the rock must be heated and/or treated with solvents. Oil shale isn’t stored in vast reserves that must be accessed miles below the surface of the planet or out in the ocean. It’s requires much less drilling or fracturing than other energy resources, which means it has less of an overall impact on the local environment.

Oil shale in the Western United States contains from a few to over 50 gallons of oil per ton of rock as measured by an assay technique called Modified Fischer Assay. To be economically attractive most developers look to process oil shale averaging above 20-gallons of oil per ton (or one-half barrel of oil coming from a 3x3x3 foot cube of oil shale in the ground). Oil shale is the rock from which shale oil is extract ed. Shale oil is similar to petroleum, and can be refined into many different substances, including diesel fuel, gasoline, and liquid petroleum gas ( LPG ). Companies can also refine shale oil to produce other commercial products, such as ammonia and sulfur. Oil shale - Oil shale - Organic content: The organic matter contained in oil shale is principally kerogen, a solid product of bacterially altered plant and animal remains that is not soluble in traditional petroleum solvents. Kerogen is the source of virtually all crude oil. The richest oil shale ranges from brown to black in colour.
