World Trade Center History The Twin Towers were the centerpieces of the World Trade Center complex. At 110 stories each, 1 WTC (North Tower) and 2 WTC (South Tower) provided nearly 10 million square feet of office space for about 35,000 people and 430 companies. The idea for the World Trade center came first in 1946, immediately after the end of World War II. The New York State Legislature appointed Winthrop Aldrich, the chairman of the Chase Bank and a member of the Rockefeller family, to look into the project’s feasibility. After Seven World Trade Center was built in the 1980s, the World Trade Center complex had a total of seven buildings; however, the most notable ones were the main Twin Towers built in the 1970s—One World Trade Center was the North Tower, and Two World Trade Center was the South Tower.

Already in 2006 one of the towers - Seven WTC, a 52 story skyscraper - was completed.
